As a show about mobsters, The Sopranos has plenty of evil characters. However, a good number of them are likable while a few simply aren't.
The critically acclaimed HBO series, The Sopranos, has once again become a subject of discussion online thanks to the fourth episode of She-Hulk: Attorney At Law. In it, the Sorcerer Supreme, Wong, is seen watching an episode of the show before a woman who has been transported to his room via a magic trick, ruins his viewing experience by giving him a spoiler about Adriana’s death
The pop culture reference serves as reminds viewers of one of the saddest deaths in the crime drama as well as one of the most likable characters. But which characters from the hit show were downright annoying? There were plenty, but fans on Reddit have picked out the unforgettable ones.
Feech La Manna
Redditor lycoloco labels the old timer “an incorrigible one-upper.” Feech—a member of the original Cosa Nostra from Sicily—tries to bully everyone after getting paroled. This angers his fellow mobsters who set him up to go back to prison.
The concepts of time and change appear alien to Feech since he unfairly tries to lay claim to his former territories, yet they have been managed by several other mobsters ever since he got locked up. Additionally, he is too sentimental. His fellow mobsters can’t help but shake their heads whenever he begins each sentence with “In my day …” To him, nothing that happens in modern times beats the good old days. When his colleagues devise a way to get him locked up again, it’s hard to pity him.
Dr. Elliot Kupferberg
Dr. Kupferberg briefly serves as Dr. Melfi’s therapist and during that time, he convinces her to cut off Tony Soprano. Redditor ddonthekeys describes him as “insufferable, pretentious and highly unprofessional.”
Dr. Kupferberg’s deep phobia of the mafia paints him in a bad light since most of the best Sopranos characters are in the mob. Despite thinking of himself as someone with a greater moral compass, he manipulates Dr. Mefli into doing something she doesn’t want to. This involves shaming her by telling other therapists that her patient is the big bad New Jersey mob boss, Tony Soprano. It’s not only a disrespectful act but also one that breaks doctor-patient confidentiality.
Father Phil Intintola
Xyzzydude dislikes how “he uses the frustrated mafia for food then self-righteously lectures them about their marriages.” The priest serves at Saint Peter & Paul Catholic Church in New Jersey.
The “priest with questionable morals” trope is common in crime dramas and Father Phil fits right into it. Not only is he a glutton who hops from one home to another for food and wine, but he also makes a habit of flirting with some of the mob wives of The Sopranos. The priest’s audacity makes him go as far as to sleep in Tony’s house when the mobster is away. There’s no doubt that if not for the Cosa Nostra’s deep respect for the church, Phil would have been a prime candidate for whacking.
Janice Soprano
Tony’s sister is hardly a fan favorite either. Redditor aradthrowawayacct says “her cyberstalking Bobby’s kids after their mom died, is above and beyond anything the other annoying characters.”
Apart from frequently clashing with her brother for no good reason, Janice does indeed make some of the most questionable dating choices in The Sopranos. Making Bobby’s kids believe they are haunted just so she can console them and paint herself as a potential next wife to the mobster is unforgivable. And so is pairing up with the loose cannon that is Richie Aprile and then convincing him to stage a coup attempt against her brother,
Jackie Jr
Redditor wildgriest describes him as “a walking train wreck in both actions and emotions.” The son of former DiMeo crime family acting boss, Jackie Sr, attempts to rise up the ranks against Tony’s wishes and ends up getting killed.
True to the Redditor’s words, there is nothing Jackie does right. He gets a proper chance of appeasing the boss by dating his daughter Meadow, but he still ends up cheating on her. He drops out of college too, even though staying in school was his late father’s greatest wish. Most importantly, he tries to prove himself as a formidable gangster by pulling off one of the most amateurish moves; robbing a card game. It’s no surprise that the recklessness gets him whacked.
A.J. Soprano
Raygunnysack feels he has “no redeeming value whatsoever.” In the series, Tony’s son struggles both socially and academically.
For A.J., being surrounded by very competent family members doesn’t help his case. Everyone around him is good at what they do so it’s hard to forgive him for not drawing some inspiration from them. A.J. gets poor grades, can’t sustain a relationship, and isn’t interested in working. Despite all that, he sees no fault in himself. He’s an unruly child too, often testing his father’s patience through disrespectful retorts.
Richie Aprile
Irishbreakfastea says, “he was a textbook sociopath in every way.” Like Feech, Richie starts causing havoc after getting paroled.
Though Richie is one of the best villains in The Sopranos, he is hard to root for in any given scenario. The hard-boiled mobster doesn’t exercise self-restraint at all. He brutalizes important mob associates and doesn’t acknowledge Tony as a leader since the mob boss is younger than him. Richie is a perpetrator of domestic abuse too, something that eventually gets him killed.
Livia Soprano
About the most unlikable characters, scrolling41 says, “Tony’s mother hands down.” In the series, Livia exhibits a strong dislike for her son.
It takes a weird kind of mother to try and kill her son, but that’s what Livia does early in the series. Flashback events show she was always a bad parent too. That no one grieves her after she dies serves as a confirmation of how unlikeable she was.
Noah Tannenbaum
Noah is Meadow’s first boyfriend at Columbia University. FPFP66 can’t understand how he dared to “walk around like he owned the Soprano house, manipulate Meadow, and threaten to knock Tony’s fucking lights out.”
Dragging to your girlfriend how you can beat up her father is as weird as it is delusional. That’s because the said father is the boss of one of the biggest crime families in America. Noah is portrayed as a very bad lover too, especially through the heartless manner in which he unceremoniously dumps Meadow just so he can focus on his studies.
Christopher Moltisanti
The young mobster is earmarked by Tony to be his successor but messes up his future through excessive drug use and endless bad decisions. Redditor fskoti feels “he was incapable of not being a screw-up, and it was infuriating.”
Christopher’s life is a case of “what could have been” had he gotten his affairs in order. Throughout the series, he has all that’s needed to succeed, including a wise father figure in Tony and a loving partner in Adriana. And unlike other mobsters who only have to rely on illegal dealings, Christopher has a promising career in the film industry. Still, he steps on his blessings and his story ends tragically.
