‘M*A*S*H’: Alan Alda Reveals He Didn’t Get One of the Show’s Jokes ‘Until Just Now’

MAS*H star Alan Alda took to social media late on Thursday night to reveal that he finally gets one of the show’s jokes.

Alda is perhaps best known for his role on MAS*H, where he played the wisecracking Army doctor, Hawkeye Pierce. In addition to starring in the popular 1970s show, Alda also made appearances in TV shows like The West Wing and 30 Rock.

But on Thursday night, the six-time Emmy Award and Golden Globe Award winner said that he is just now getting one of the classic MAS*H jokes. Alda replied to one of his followers on Twitter who said she just realized why the joke was so funny.

“…Almost 50 years later and I just got why the place in #mash being called ‘Adams Ribs’ is funny 🤦🏽‍♀️. Forgive me @alanalda,” user @AniWanKenobi wrote.

And the MAS*H star did more than just forgive her. He agreed with her, saying that it just hit him as well.

“Now that you mention it, I didn’t get it until just now,” Alda wrote on Twitter.

M*A*S*H ‘Adam’s Ribs’ Episode

Of course, Alan Alda is referring to a Season 3 episode of MAS*H called “Adam’s Ribs.”

After getting fed up with being served the same meal over and over for a week, Alda’s character comes up with a new idea. He schemes up a plan to get some ribs and barbecue sauce shipped over from a restaurant in Chicago.

However, it’s the name of the restaurant, and the episode itself, that is sparking up a conversation today. Apparently, many of the show’s fans, and even Alda himself, didn’t quite catch on to the joke behind the name “Adam’s Ribs.”

We all assume that they are referring to in M*A*S*H is the story of Adam and Eve in the Bible. The story, of course, is that God created Eve from one of Adam’s ribs. However, if there is a different joke behind the restaurant’s name, hopefully, they let us in on it soon.

Meanwhile, the iconic episode has led so many fans to wonder one thing. Is there or is there not a real restaurant in Chicago called “Adam’s Ribs?” And although there was no restaurant by that name in the Chicago area at the time, a quick Google search today shows that there are several named “Adam’s Ribs” across the U.S.
