‘M*A*S*H’: Alan Alda Beautifully Explained Why His Wife is Still ‘His Most Important Mentor’

MAS*H star Alan Alda revealed why his wife is still the “most important mentor” he has during a conversation at Stony Brook University.

M*A*S*H was an American comedy series that aired on CBS from 1972 to 1983. The show’s acronym stands for “Mobile Army Surgical Hospital”. The show itself is an ensemble piece about five members of the M*A*S*H unit.

Alan Alda starred as the surgeon Captain Benjamin Franklin “Hawkeye” Pierce. Pierce is often found making wisecracks, womanizing, and drinking heavily when he isn’t operating. He’s especially fond of pulling pranks and regularly torments other characters such as Frank Burns and “Hot Lips” Houlihan.

Alda said watching his father act during his childhood had a massive impact on him growing up. However, he added that his wife’s constant support is what has kept him going throughout the years.

“All throughout my life, I’ve found people who are smarter than me and from whom I could learn, including my wife” Alda said. “She might be my most important mentor, though she might not realize it.”

How M*A*S*H Star Alan Alda Met His Wife Arlene

Alan Alda and his wife Arlene have been married for over 64 years. Even so, the M*A*S*H star says his relationship with his wife started off with an unlikely.

They met while Alda was studying English and Theatre at Fordham University in New York City during the 1950s. Alda admits that he was a bit of a partier at the time, and that’s how he and Arlene Weiss first met.

She was studying at nearby Hunter College and working on her clarinet playing. He once attended one of her performances where she played Mozart. He told her she was “very good” after the performance, according to the Washington Post.

The rest, it seems, is history.

Alda Outside of the Military Hospital

Alda’s career rose to new heights once he left M*A*S*H in 1983. He immediately landed a role on the television series “The Four Seasons” playing Jack Boroughs in 1984. For the rest of the 1980s and 1990s, Alda appeared in several cinematic movies and television movies as well.

During the 2000s, Alda landed several big roles. For example, he appeared on Aaron Sorkin’s hit series “The West Wing” for two seasons as Senator Arnold Vinick. He also starred in the movie What Women Want as Dan Wanamaker.

Three more recent credits that fans of his may know him from include playing Alan Fitch on “The Black List”. Alda also appeared in the television series “Ray Donovan” for two seasons as Dr. Arthur Amiot.

Maybe his most surprising credit is that he narrated the television movie The Emperor’s New Clothes in 2018.

Alda doesn’t have any current projects in the works, according to IMDB.
