Downton Abbey: A New Era Photos Give First Look At A New Character
New images from the upcoming Downton Abbey: A New Era show familiar faces, as well as Laura Haddock’s new character arriving on the scene.
Official photos from the upcoming sequel film Downton Abbey: A New Era feature some familiar faces, as well as a brand new character arriving on the scene. The original UK-made ITV series ran from 2010 to 2015 and followed the story of the aristocratic Crawleys and their lesser-fortuned staff at the fictional country estate of Downton Abbey. The historic show, which covered a period beginning in the 1910s and stretching into the 1920s, found unlikely acclaim in the US on PBS, where it became arguably even more popular than it was at home. Following the series’ end, a movie, also titled Downton Abbey, was released in 2019. Now, a Downton Abbey movie sequel is on its way with the core characters returning, alongside some new faces.
In official stills from Focus Features, the returning cast, including Hugh Bonneville’s Robert Crawley and Michelle Dockery’s Lady Mary, are seemingly resuming their usual roles in the house. Another image shows Edith (Laura Carmichael), Bertie (Harry Hadden-Paton), Tom Branston (Allen Leech) and Lucy (Tuppence Middleton) heading to a game of tennis. One notable feature of the new images is the emergence of Guardians Of The Galaxy’s Laura Haddock, who is joining the world of Downton and can be seen arriving in glamorous style via a retro automobile. Haddock’s role in the film’s story remains unknown, but the English-born actress has experience on both sides of the Atlantic. See the first look images below:
Haddock is one of several big names joining the cast for this sequel. While not seen in these first stills, Hannibal star Hugh Dancy and The Affair’s Dominic West are both set to appear. The plot of the sequel remains unknown, but it looks to carry on from the previous entry, which saw the Crowley’s welcome a Royal visit to Downton in 1927. Written and produced by original series creator Julian Fellowes, the new movie is being directed by Simon Curtis; the BAFTA nominated director behind My Week With Marilyn and The Art Of Dancing In The Rain. Originally slated for release this Christmas, fans will finally see what’s next for the Crawleys and their enigmatic staff when Downton Abbey: A New Era releases in theaters next year.
